Once you have set up your profile and met Professor Willow, you will have the opportunity to catch your first Pokémon. The three starter pokémon that you will be able to choose from are (1) Bulbasaur, (2) Charmander, and (3) Squirtle. All three have a three-stage evolution and are usually powerful enough to compete with other top-ranking Pokémon.
Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur is a grass and poison type Pokémon, and its evolutions are Ivysaur then Venusaur. You can catch Bulbasaur and its evolutions either through catching them in rare encounters in the wild or evolving Bulbasaur using the candies you have collected. The original 151 pokémon in the game greatly consist of water types, which grass type moves are super effective against them in battle.
Charmander
Charmander is a fire type, and its evolutions are Charmeleon and Charizard. Once you evolve Charmander into Charizard, it will be both a fire and flying type. As mentioned before, there are a lot of water types in the game, so Charmander may be considered a weaker pokémon in battles. Still, it will be strong against grass type and bug type pokémon.
Squirtle
Squirtle and its two evolved forms, Wartortle and Blastoise, is a water type. Water types are strong against fire types, ground types, and rock types, making them useful for battles and defending gyms. Although it is weak against grass type and electric type pokémon, electric types are not as commonly found in the game, and grass types are not super effective in battle.
Pikachu
Although Pikachu is not one of the three starters offered, there is a way for you to catch Pikachu as your starter instead of the three Pokémon mentioned above. Pikachu and its evolution, Raichu, are an electric type, which is strong against flying and water types, but weak against ground types.
Instead of selecting Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, walk away from the trio until they disappear. If you repeat this four times, Pikachu will appear, and you will be able to catch him or her as your starter.
Try it Yourself
Choosing a starter is purely based on preference and what you are looking to get out of the game. You may want to catch the most popular or best-looking pokémon, the best one to use in battle, the most difficult to catch because of your location, etc. Whichever Pokémon you do choose, do not worry about not being able to catch the others. You will have numerous chances to catch them as you play the game. You can catch these, and other Pokémon, through encounters, research, raids, eggs, and trades. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your Pokémon adventure!
