Shadow Pokémon are Pokémon whose hearts have been corrupted by Team Go Rocket. These Pokémon have red eyes and give off a purple aura. It is your job to rescue them and purify them.
How to Catch Shadow Pokémon
You can cath Shadow Pokémon by battling and defeating Team Go Rocket at Pokéstops that they have overrun. A Pokéstop has been invaded by Team Go Rocket when it is black with a red ‘R’ above it. Tap and spin the Pokéstop as you normally would and once you have collected the items a Team Go Rocket member will challenge you to a battle. Once you have defeated the Team Go Rocket member, he or she will abandon the Shadow Pokémon. This will allow you to capture it in a similar way to capturing defeated raids. Be prepared as you will have a limited amount of Pokéballs and Shadow Pokémon act more aggressively by charging.
How to Purify Shadow Pokémon
Once you have rescued the Shadow Pokémon, you can purify it. Select your Shadow Pokémon in your Pokémon storage and there will be a pink ‘Purify’ button. Similarly to evolving a Pokémon, it will cost candies and stardust to purify it. Select ‘Purify’ and then ‘Yes’ to watch your Shadow Pokémon become purified.
Benefits of Purifying Shadow Pokémon
Purifying Shadow Pokémon have the following benefits:
- The candy required to power up or evolve the Pokémon will decrease 10%
- The stardust required to power up or teach the Pokémon a secondary move will decrease 10%
- The Pokémon will learn Return
- IV’s will increase by 2 in every stat (Attack, Defense, and HP)
- The Pokémon’s level will increase
Other Information About Shadow and Purified Pokémon
- Shadow Pokémon cannot be traded, but Purified Pokémon can
- You can place Shadow Pokémon and Purified Pokémon in gyms
- Purified Pokémon can be mass transferred so be careful
- You can find Lucky Shadow Pokémon and purify it into a Lucky Purified Pokémon
- If you take a photo of a Shadow Pokémon it will be so happy that you are taking its photo that it will lose its angry expression
