Since Pokémon Go does not have a breeding feature, like many of the main games do, eggs can be retreived through random Pokéstops and gifts. Egg hatching can be extremely useful for expanding your collection and powering up Pokémon you already have. You can collect up to as many as 9 eggs at once and there is no way of telling which Pokémon will is inside of the eggs.
Egg Distances
Although you cannot find out exactly which Pokémon is inside of your egg, until it hatches, the different distances (2 km, 5 km, 7 km, and 10 km) can help you narrow down which type of Pokémon are likely to hatch.
NOTE (March 2020): For now and until further notice, due to Covid-19 measurements and precautions all egg incubators will automatically be twice as effective. This means that distances you need to walk are halved (e.g. A 10 km egg will only require you to walk 5 km to hatch).

Egg Hatching Tips
- If you collect the maximum of 9 eggs, you should hatch some as quickly as possible so you can steadly receive new eggs. To do this quickly, prioritize 2 km eggs until you have more space.
- Hold off on opening gifts from friends if you want 7 km eggs.
- Incubators that you purchase with Pokécoins are disposable after three uses. To get the most use out of them, use them on 10 km eggs, while you simultaneously use your infinate-use incubator on 2 km and 5 km eggs.
- Egg are a great tool to power up Pokémon becuase when the egg hatches, it gives you a random amount of candy that is usually more than the typical amount you would receive when catching the Pokémon.
- Activate your Adventure Sync feature so you can earn walking distance when the app is closed.
- Traveling in cars, trains, and other fast moving vehicles will not count towards your distance travelled.
- Events and seasonal updates will increase the rates of certain Pokémon hatching.
- The CP of Pokémon hatched from eggs are tied to the trainer level at the time you aquired the egg and not when it hatches.
- Some Pokémon can only hatch from eggs that were aquired in specific regions.
