Pokémon Go Friends
Pokémon Go offers numerous ways in which you can interact with your friends.
How to Add a Friend
To add a friend in the game, you must first get his or her Trainer Code. Once you have his or her trainer code: tap on your avatar profile in the bottom left-hand corner –> tap ‘friends’ in the top right-hand corner of the screen –> select ‘add friend’ –> and EITHER type in his or her Trainer Code or scan his or her code through the ‘QR Code’ tab to send the invitation. Once he or she accepts your request, you two will be friends where you can see under the ‘friends’ tab.
Interactions with Friends
As mentioned before Pokémon Go allows you to interact with your friends in multiple ways. Friend interactions include the following: build your friendship level, send gifts, battle, and trade.
Build Friendship Level
There are currently four friendship levels and you can increase your friendship level with someone by sending gifts to each other, participating in Raids and Gym battles together, and trading Pokémon with each other. You can only increase your friendship level, using these methods, once per day per friend. Therefore, it will take multiple days to fully level up your friendship. The friendship levels, number of days to unlock each, and the bonuses you will receive are as follows:
- Good Friends (1 Day): the ability to trade and send/receive gifts
- Great Friends (7 Days): small stardust discount for trades, small gym and raid battle attack bonuses, and +1 rapid capture Pokéballs
- Ultra Friends (30 Days): medium stardust discount for trades, medium gym and raid battle attack bonuses, and +4 rapid capture Pokéballs
- Best Friends (90 Days): large stardust discount for trades, large gym and raid battle attack bonuses, and +4 rapid capture Pokéballs
Send Gifts
You can collect gifts, at random, by spinning Pokéstops you visit. You can only have a total of 10 gifts in your bag at once, but they do not take up any of your inventory space. In addition, you can only open 20 gifts per day. To send a gift to a friend, go to the ‘friends’ tab and tap on the friend you would like to send a gift to. Once you have selected a friend, you will see the option to send him or her a gift. Your friend will then be able to see the gift appear next to your icon in their friend’s list and once he or she opens your gift he or she can send you a gift in return.
Battle and Raids
When you become Great Friends with someone, you two can participate in Gym battles and Raids together. Through this, you can earn attack bonuses to give to your Pokémon and rapid capture Pokéballs.
Trade
If you are near a friend and have a trainer level of 10 or higher, you can trade Pokémon with each other. Completing trades earns you bonus candy for the Pokémon that you have traded away. In addition, the candy bonus can increase if the Pokémon you two traded were caught in far apart locations from each other. All trades require stardust and some trades require more than others. As you build your friendship level, less stardust will be required for trades between you two. Certain Pokémon, such as Legendary Pokémon, Shiny Pokémon, or Pokémon that you do not currently have in your Pokédex will be considered a special trade. Special trades can only occur once per day with a Great Friend, Ultra Friend, or Best Friend. In addition, it usually requires a lot of stardust to complete a special trade.
