Undeniably, one of the best parts of being a Pokémon trainer, is competing against other skilled trainers to see who will come out on top. Strategy in all pokémon games of the past gives a massive advantage to any player. However, in Pokémon Go, battling in raids may provide you with the false impression that strategy is not as crucial in this game. Rest assured, there are plenty of strategies involved in the Battle League for Pokémon Go, it just takes a different form than what you may be used to. Now we will cover several strategies and battling tips to improve your rankings in the Pokémon Go Battle League!
Use your Strongest Pokémon
This may come as an obvious start for many of you. No matter which league you battle in, one of the most significant advantages you can get is to ensure you are using your pokémon with the highest IVs. This will ensure that your health, defense, and attack are the best they can be, so when you power-up the cp of your pokémon, you will have the best chance at winning a battle.
Choosing right type combinations
If you are going head to head against a pokémon with higher IVs than your own, you may be out of luck. Unless, of course, you select a team with decent type coverage. There are plenty of different strategies you can come across when picking types. However, most approaches are built to ensure your pokémon team will have a variety of resistances and improved attacks against other types. You have lots of freedom to be creative with your type picks here. But good general advice would be to not make a team of three water types, three ghost types, etc.
Switch out at the right time
If you are unlucky enough to start with a pokémon that is weak to your opponents, you almost always must switch out your pokémon. If you don’t have to switch, however, planning your first switch will give you a crucial advantage. The simplest way to understand this is that the player to switch pokémon first will be at a disadvantage. This is because your opponent may have a pokémon that is resistant to whatever pokémon you swap into.
Keep in mind the fifty-second cooldown before you are allowed to switch pokémon again! If your opponent can shift into a pokémon that is strong against yours, you will almost certainly lose your pokémon or both your shields early in the match. Whenever you can, try and let your opponent switch their pokémon first. If you are lucky, you will have a pokémon in your party that is strong against theirs, and you will have at least fifty seconds to take advantage of this opportunity.
Pick strong moves for your pokémon
Of course, HMs and TMs give another massive boost to people wanting to become champions in the Battle League. To give your team a great head start when in battles, make sure that your fast and charge moves are the right combination for each pokémon in your group. When picking moves, you should take damage and damage per second into account. For fast moves, you also have to consider the energy gained per second. Similarly, for charge moves, you must know how much energy they cost. You can find all of the information you need on moves at pokemon.gameinfo.io. You can search whatever pokémon you want to improve and check which move combinations are the best. Keep in mind this list doesn’t take into account the possibility of unlocking a second charge move. For this reason, the site may not give enough information for you. If you want to look more in-depth at each pokémon and the moves they have available you can do so at this helpful Pokémon database
Unlock a second charge move
Each pokémon can unlock a second charge move. This is different from using a TM or HM to change which charge or fast your pokémon can use. Pricing varies between each pokémon you want to have a second charge move, but you can expect to pay around 10,000 in stardust at a minimum. Some pokémon even require about 100,000 stardust and lots of candy to unlock the second charge move. This is pricy but opens a world of potential and advantages when it comes to battling, so it is most definitely worth it. If you are low on stardust, there are many methods you can use to collect enough for this advantage. Read our stardust gathering article to learn some of the best ways to rack up these valuable points. Check out the images below for examples of different charge move costs.
